Mom, October 1948
Mother, you died seven years ago today.
God planted me and my spirit in your womb.
You brought me into the world to be forever held, loved and comforted in your arms.
From the first time my infant eyes opened and saw you until your very last breath I believed I had the most beautiful mother in the entire world.
Your inexhaustible energy and love for me left me with the ability to always smile despite the devastating paralysis of polio.
As all great mothers, you were always there to pick me up when I fell trying to regain my ability to walk after polio or when I suffered loss of any kind.
Mother, you never told me I could not ever run again, try out for the baseball team or the marching band.
You never told me polio would limit my potential.
You never said that I would have trouble finding a wonderful wife, like Dorothy, who would love and accept my disabilities, scars or deformities as you did.
Mother, you were born on April Fools’ Day. Yet your life was no joke to me and you always made me laugh.
Mother, your favorite dessert was Angel Food Cake.
I know today you must be eating that cake with Dad and other Angels, Archangels at the Lord’s Table in Heaven.
I know the Lord continues to hold you in His arms as you did me.
Love,
Your boy, Jack
