Prayer to Find the Treasure in the Darkness – Easter 2017

April 14, 2017 by Jack Emmott 5 Comments

Dear God – In this season of Easter hope I know that You have a purpose for me beyond illness, loss or the death of those dear to me.   In prayer please help me find the treasure waiting for me in the darkness. As with the birth, death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus, the ending of His life was the beginning of a new life with You in Heaven.  May I find that holy treasure and blessing in the dark times in my life. May I be illumined by an ending which in Your grace becomes the beginning for a newer, deeper and richer life in the glorious light of Your love for me.  In faith, Easter Sunday always follows Good Friday.   Amen

If you like this prayer, please share.

In Memory to You, Mother – March 24, 2017

March 24, 2017 by Jack Emmott 6 Comments

Mom, October 1948

Mother, you died seven years ago today.

God planted me and my spirit in your womb.

You brought me into the world to be forever held, loved and comforted in your arms.

From the first time my infant eyes opened and saw you until your very last breath I believed I had the most beautiful mother in the entire world.

Your inexhaustible energy and love for me left me with the ability to always smile despite the devastating paralysis of polio.

As all great mothers, you were always there to pick me up when I fell trying to regain my ability to walk after polio or when I suffered loss of any kind.

Mother, you never told me I could not ever run again, try out for the baseball team or the marching band.

You never told me polio would limit my potential.

You never said that I would have trouble finding a wonderful wife, like Dorothy, who would love and accept my disabilities, scars or deformities as you did.

Mother, you were born on April Fools’ Day. Yet your life was no joke to me and you always made me laugh.

Mother, your favorite dessert was Angel Food Cake.

I know today you must be eating that cake with Dad and other Angels, Archangels at the Lord’s Table in Heaven.

I know the Lord continues to hold you in His arms as you did me.

Love,

Your boy, Jack

Jack, after polio 1955

Prayer to Live Fully Each Day – March 13, 2017

March 13, 2017 by Jack Emmott 1 Comment

Tres Palacios Bay

Heavenly Father – When I awaken tomorrow, may my heart be ever grateful for Your gift to me of another day on Earth. Just as I, because of the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus, look forward to eternal life with You, every day please help me to look forward to seeing, hearing, feeling and touching the beauty around me. To hold a young child. To embrace one I love. To hear a bird’s song or the notes of a beautiful symphony. To listen in the silence of prayer for the beat of angel wings around me. To plan at least one simple, small thing to look forward to or accomplish this day. In doing so may I receive each and every day a glimpse of the joy, pleasure and peace which await me in heaven amidst the everlasting life, light and love of Christ, Your blessed Son. Amen

Prayer to Live in the Now – March 6, 2017

March 5, 2017 by Jack H. Emmott Leave a Comment

Heavenly God, You, the Holy One, Who gifted life to me as Your blessing, I beseech Thee to help me fully and wholly live in the Now. Now is all I have today. Please help me not to live in the past. In prayer I have learned that carrying anger, resentment and lack of forgiveness of the past into the present only robs me of finding love, gratefulness, wonder and awe today. I know that my thinking that true happiness will be gained in the acquisition of future possessions, rewards and success prevents me from fully living and deeply loving others today. In prayer may I hear in Your gift to me of the Now, the heartbeat of Your love for me. May I feel the flutter of angels’ wings around me. May I take in with each and every breath the air filled with Your love for me. Amen

This prayer was inspired by Brother Curtis Almquist, an Episcopal monk, who spoke at the Tenth Annual Collaborative Law Conference in Dallas on March 3, 2017. From Emery House, a retreat facility on 140 acres in West Newbury, Massachusetts, and beyond, Brother Curtis helps others to find the sacred in the ordinary and experience the extraordinary gift of life in the present through prayer and silence. Thank you, Brother Curtis.

Prayer for Purity of Heart – February 14, 2017

February 14, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Heavenly Father- Please help me be with You in prayer so that I and my heart can be and become one with You. My human emotions, self-centeredness, anger, lack of forgiveness and fear do not allow me to fully invite You and Your Son, Jesus Christ, into my heart. In faith I know that Your love, if seated in my heart, will transform and purify my heart. Then I can love others as I wish to be loved. I can be at peace with my self so that I can be at peace with my neighbor. I can be Your child and walk in the peace, love and light in the footsteps of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Amen

This prayer was inspired by the sermon given on February 12, 2017 by Stuart Bates, Rector, Saint Francis Episcopal Church-Houston.

Prayer for the Golden Rule to Rule Our Hearts – January 30, 2017

January 30, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Heavenly Father – You have said through the Bible that we should do to others as we would have them do to us.  In this age of threats to our safety from terrorism, please have Your angels bend over us and those we love to protect us from harm.  As we take steps around the world to shield us from terror, please help us at the same time to honor Your Golden Rule.  We cannot truly love You if we do not also honor and love Your children according to Your command.  Please give our hearts the strength to follow this Golden Rule as we pray and act to make the Earth a safer place for all Your children.  Amen

Prayer for Victims of Abusive Personal Relationships – January 22, 2017

January 23, 2017 by Jack Emmott 2 Comments

Heavenly Father – Today I pray to You for all Your children who are in abusive personal relationships. Many of the victims have lived so long with abuse that they do not know the difference between the darkness and the light or between love and hate. They are so accustomed to living with abuse that staying in it appears to be safer than taking courageous steps to leave it. The gravity of abuse too often overpowers the vision of the abused of ever living a life full of hope and happiness. God, please let the abused know that Your power and armor of light is greater than the cycle of abuse. Let them know that You are present to lead them along the path to peaceable and loving relationships. Please empower abusers to surrender their anger to You, so that one day they may be able to safely live and truly love others. Please help their children not create future family homes with the kind of abuse they experienced in their childhood. All this I pray in Your Holy Name. Amen.

Prayer for Millennials – January 17, 2017

January 17, 2017 by Jack Emmott 1 Comment

Heavenly Father– Today among Your children are millennials, the next gifted generation who will undoubtedly lead us into a future of historic advances in medicine, science, technology and art. I pray that You guide these talented millennials to overcome the challenges facing them. Because of the internet and lack of parental supervision many of them have been exposed to too much adult information before they were spiritually, psychologically and biologically prepared. For high achievers in our competitive society, family time and work life balance is much more difficult to obtain. For some parents homework has become the new family meal. The peace available in prayer is often eclipsed by too much electronic and social media stimulation. Although millennials will certainly use advanced technology to connect Your children around the world in ways once never dreamed of, please show them that the most important connection in life is with You and in following the footsteps of Your Precious Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for New Year’s Resolutions- January 7, 2017

January 8, 2017 by Jack H. Emmott 1 Comment

Almighty God, thank You for the body You have given me which is animated with Your precious Spirit. Please help me to take good care of my body as the temple of the fragile life You have given me. I owe it to You, to myself, and to those who love me and I love, to practice good physical and mental health. In prayer please assist me in my daily quest to care for my health so that I, as Your Earthly vessel, may be a better and more energetic servant in Your Name. May my body be Your vessel to pour the light and love of Your Son, Jesus Christ, out into the world. Amen.
