Dear God- Just look at me sitting at the Dad’s Club in Spring Branch with my heroes, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with Trigger beside us when I was 7!
Dale’s kiss on my cheek remains as sweet and magic as this memory so many years ago. That moment of light shines bright against the dark days and months I had spent in the hospital because of polio. This light-filled moment let me know that, although paralysis was dark and dreary, joy, hope, and wonderful things were still possible. So many bad things have been transformed by Your love into good for me.
Every year since then, when the Salt Grass Trail Riders and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo comes to Houston, I am thankful unto You for the enduring blessing I received from You that day with my cowboy and cowgirl heroes. In addition to the comfort of You being with me in prayer as I struggled to recover from polio, I had my spirits continually uplifted by the western heroes of the time including the likes of Annie Oakley and the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
Thanks for being a good and great God. My God who is big enough to allow his servants, like me, to worship You and still have living heroes to inspire and sustain me.
God, You are my armor of light. But, thanks to You, rodeos, cowboys, and heroes kept my young hopeful heart in the clouds where some dreams can come true. Amen
