Visit with the North Shore Rotary Club at SanJac North, 9-7-17

September 8, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Pictured with me are Shawn Silman and Adam Lund, Club President and Vice-President of Capital Bank (Jacinto City).

So grateful to have been asked by Shawn Silman, Member of North Shore Rotary Club and Dean of Liberal Arts at San Jacinto College-North Campus, to speak to the Club on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Despite the effects of Hurricane Harvey, there was a large turnout at the luncheon to hear my remarks.
I congratulated the Club on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio around the globe. I told the group that I was a victim of a flood at age six by contracting polio in floodwaters. As I have written in Bending Angels, there is always a light in the darkness. What followed the darkness of polio, the flood and now Harvey are the best qualities within our common humanity. Praise be to God, this Club’s members and all those in this area who have stepped up to rescue, support and help those in need.

I shared how the lessons I learned in dark times led me to be a collaborative divorce and family lawyer. Collaborative process works because it protects privacy, preserves important relationships, allows couples to fashion their own outcomes with the support of professionals in communication, parenting and finance and does not let the outcome be decided by the attorneys, the courts or juries.

At Gray Reed and McGraw, LLP, our Firm is dedicated to offering the collaborative law resolution process to those who choose to use it.

Prayer from a Six-Year-Old Boy Flood Victim – Saturday, September 2, 2017

September 2, 2017 by Jack Emmott 6 Comments

Dear Lord – In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey I cannot forget this image of the six-year-old boy who was victimized by a flood.

In the aftermath of the flood, the house he lived in was damaged. He was totally paralyzed after ingesting the fecal polio virus in flood waters. Leaving his normal life behind, he was quarantined in the hospital, was separated from those he loved and eventually in adulthood was confined to an iron lung for five long years.

Jack after polio 1955

God, I know that I am much older now. But in me that six-year-old boy pictured here still dwells. The boy is forever thankful for what that flood intended for bad was transformed into good by Your unfailing love.

God, that boy learned that a tragedy, like Hurricane Harvey, is a terrible thing to waste for Your children. It is an unwelcome opportunity to know and serve You better.

God, the six-year-old boy asks that You please send Your angels down from Heaven to deep in the Heart of Texas to bend over all victims of this flood to comfort them as You did him.

God, please have Your angels deliver to all victims the same Holy message the boy received from You at age six. That because of You and Your love, Harvey will not be the end of their lives but surely be the beginning of deeper, more joyous, spiritual and complete lives because of You.

God, in Your Grace, please do for them what You did for that six-year-old flood victim.

God, please help each victim learn what that prayerful six-year-old boy did.

In You the boy learned that his life did not end with that flood. It truly began.

Amen

Prayer to Bless a Child’s Backpack August 25, 2017 by Jack H. Emmott

August 25, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Churches across America and around the world are now celebrating the beginning of a new school year by blessing the backpacks of students. In the event your child or grandchild, niece or nephew is unable to attend the service blessing, please take the opportunity to bless the backpack carried to school by your special child of God.

Father, I ask that You please bless this backpack and Your child who carries it.  May the child who wears it attend school each day with a fully open mind and loving heart for learning.  As each school day passes and lessons are learned about the beautiful Earth You have created, may this child be ever thankful for the opportunity to explore new things and to grow in mind, body and spirit because of You.  May all the child’s teachers mindfully encourage and nourish the flowering of the gifts You instilled in this child, this student and young servant of Christ.  Amen

God – Every once in a while, I wonder how I am ever going to get through a difficult situation, the loss of a love one, a personal problem or a relationship with far too much drama.  A successful outcome seems impossible.  Please help me to face such challenges as opportunities to grow in You and ways to know and serve You better.  May I trust in You to provide to me what I need each day. Prayer to Find the Treasure in the Darkness – August 11, 2017

August 11, 2017 by Jack Emmott 1 Comment

God – Please guide my heart to find the treasure in the darkness.  As the dark sky enables me to see the bright stars in the sky, may the dark and difficult times be Your invitation to see Your blessed love and light for me.  May I remain ever faithful in trusting that You are most present when I feel most alone and abandoned.  As Your Son, Jesus, was lifted up to save me from death, may I raise up my heart in troubled times in faith, hope and thanksgiving to You to lead me to Your kingdom on Earth and in Heaven.   Amen

12th Annual Collaborative Law Luncheon in San Antonio

August 9, 2017 by Jack Emmott 1 Comment

With Tom Vick, President of the State Bar of Texas and Camille Milner, Immediate Past President of CDT

I was overjoyed and energized to attend the 12th Annual Collaborative Law Luncheon at the Advanced Family Law Course in San Antonio. Collaborative Divorce Texas’s featured speaker was Tom Vick, President of the State Bar of Texas. In his talk entitled, “Musings of a Collaborative President”, Tom shared the importance of the collaborative process to resolve conflict to preserve relationships and protect children from collateral damage in divorce. Camille Milner, Immediate Past President of CDT, introduced Tom in an eloquent and heartfelt manner.

Thanks to Tom and Camille for an outstanding program which benefited the attendees of this sold out event. All of us can take Tom’s moving remarks back to our communities and better serve our clients.  My firm, Gray, Reed and McGraw, LLP was one of the proud sponsors of the luncheon.

Prayer to See Christ’s Story as My Story – August 4, 2017

August 5, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Almighty God -Thank you for sending Your precious Son, Jesus, to carry the cross to save me from sin. In going down to death, He and I were raised up to live beyond earthly years.   In living my life of faith and service to You, may I see my life and the living of it as carrying the cross Jesus carried for me.  As in the story of Christ may I see that in Your grace, all dark times in my life are ways to find and see Your healing light and love.  May my every loss be transformed into spiritual gain.  May my suffering be the path to joy and peace which passes all understanding.

May the story of my life be read by You as a tribute to Your Son’s story.  In carrying the cross may I find the way to Heaven here and now on earth and not sit idly by waiting for everlasting life and Your eternal love after my death.         Amen

Prayer for the Love of Imperfections in Me and Others – July 30, 2017

July 30, 2017 by Jack Emmott Leave a Comment

Merciful God – Amidst the imperfections within me and the differences, imperfections and troubling behaviors of those near to me, please open my eyes and my heart to see and feel the perfect beauty in Your abundant Grace. For me to expect perfection in me and in others only leads me down the darkened path of despair and disappointment. Worse, it breeds intolerance and harsh judgment in me. In Your mercy and in the mystery of the life, death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus, please lead my mind, heart and soul in the way of the cross. May I live in You and die in Christ. May I have the faith to trust in You that all the imperfections in me and others will be healed in Your perfect love for all Your children on Earth and in Heaven. May I follow the example of Your Son, Jesus, who embraced with open arms the imperfect, the unloved, the unlovable, the lame and the lost in the perfect love that redeems the world now and forever.     Amen

Prayer for Parenting with Patience and Understanding – July 23, 2017

July 23, 2017 by Jack Emmott 1 Comment

Heavenly Father – Today I pray to You for patience and understanding in disciplining my child. When my child says or does something which displeases me, I first react with anger and harsh words. I know this is wrong. Please forgive me. Please help me to first ask questions, to understand and not jump to conclusions or harsh treatment of my child. Help me act as a loving parent to discipline my child with calm wisdom.   With Your guidance may I do so.  I too am not perfect. One day I know that I will do or say something which upsets or hurts my child. In that case may my child treat me with the same degree of dignity, patience and understanding as I have shown my child.    Amen.
